Devil May Care, the new James Bond novel, is published in the US and overseas on 28 May 2008. The book launch marks the centenary of Bond creator Ian Fleming 1908-2008.

While “My name is Bond ... James Bond” is memorable to many from the films, less people have read the Bond books by Ian Fleming. Launched to celebrate 100 years since the birth of the Bond creator and writer Ian Fleming, the Fleming Estate commissioned Sebastian Faulks – British author of Birdsong, Charlotte Gray, The Girl at the Lion D’Or and editor of The Vintage Book of War Stories – to write a new novel for Bond readers.

Devil May Care in the Fleming Style

Sebastian Faulks, in an interview for BBC News last year (11 July 2007) said that Devil May Care was “about 80% Fleming” and that he tried to “isolate the most essential and the most enjoyable aspects of the books”. Fourteen titles by Ian Fleming featuring 007 James Bond were published between 1953 and 1966:

  • Casino Royale (1953)
  • Live and Let Die (1954)
  • Moonraker (1955)
  • Diamonds Are Forever (1956)
  • From Russia with Love (1957)
  • Dr. No (1958)
  • Goldfinger (1959)
  • For Your Eyes Only (1960)
  • Thunderball (1961)
  • The Spy Who Loved Me (1962)
  • On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (1963)
  • You Only Live Twice (1964)
  • The Man With The Golden Gun (1965)
  • Octopussy and the Living Daylights (1966)

In the 2007 interview with BBC News, Faulks said that the Fleming books read today had “stood up” and “I put this down to three things – the sense of jeopardy Fleming creates about his solitary hero, a certain playfulness in the narrative details and a crisp, journalistic style that hadn’t dated”. The story of Devil May Care is set in 1967 during the Cold War and the literary spy action involves James Bond travelling to a raft of locations including the Middle East, Paris and London.

Art of Bond Cover Design

Collectors and readers of the original Bond novels – in hardback and paperback – appreciate Fleming’s book cover artwork wrapped around the spy thriller stories.

The international travelling exhibition Bond Bound: Ian Fleming and the Art of Cover Design – soon to arrive at the City Art Centre Edinburgh Scotland after its current display at The Fleming Collection, Mayfair, London - will exhibit original artwork and a social history of publishing James Bond novels.

As part of the Ian Fleming Centenary 1908-2008, the 14 Fleming Bond novels are being published as new hardback editions with cover art design by Michael Gillette and Jon Gray.

Bond in book format written by Ian Fleming, who died of heart failure on August 12 1964, is a long-lived publishing success. With a Ian Fleming Centenary launch of Devil May Care – on board HMS Exeter at Tower Bridge in London – readers across the world will soon be able to assess the first James Bond book since 1966, a 2008 Fleming-style novel by Sebastian Faulks, Devil May Care set in 1967.

For further information about the events and exhibitions can be found in Ian Fleming Centenary and a full biography can be found at the Ian Fleming Centre.

Devil May Care by Sebastian Faulks is published in the US by Doubleday and by Penguin Books in Europe, Australia, New Zeland, South Africa and India.
